Concert: Bauhaus

A good way to start Halloween weekend, I went to see Bauhaus at the Wiltern on Friday night. The show was great; Daniel Ash is still so cool but Murphy looks weird, older and blond – he hasn’t lost his voice though. They even played Love & Rockets’ “Slice of life”. I must admit I got the chills when I heard the first bass notes of “Bela Lugosi’s dead”. Napster’s new service officially recorded the concert and then released a limited number of CD’s at the end of the show. So I got my CD of the show and it sounds good – it’s not one of these bad bootlegs.

Concerts: BRMC & NIN

Concerts
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club

Last night I went to see Black Rebel Motorcycle Club at the Henri Fonda in Hollywood.

I was surprised to Mark Gardener – of the Ride fame – opening. I saw Ride live a long time ago and I was kind sad to Gardener half-bald and with a cheap suit, especially since he was opening for a band he influenced. He looked kinda pathetic compared to his glory days (well we all get old anyway) but the show was actually pretty good, including two Ride songs. His new stuff is in the Celtic/Americanna/Folk vein and he still sounds good.

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club was great. They started acoustic, with songs from their new album and then rocked with a full band. The 2 frontmen are very talented, vocal-wise and as multi-instrumentalists. It was way better than what I expected, as they left the shadow of The Jesus & Mary Chain to find their own voice, somewhere between beautiful ballads and moments of pure – fuzzy – energy. An awesome show.

NIN
On October 1st, I went to see Nine Inch Nails at the Hollywood Bowl. I was glad to see Autolux opening, as I really like their album. However, I though Queens of the Stoneage were dull – all their songs sound the same and the singer doesn’t have such a great voice.
Nine Inch Nails was great, way better than what I remembered from The Fragile tour. All the songs were sharp and there really wasn’t a dull moment.

Marylin Manson was there and I realized how tall he is – he looks like a scarecrow.
